Technical Data on Nautilus Braids

About our Ropes

Most of Nautilus Braid’s ropes are made from high tenacity continuously spun multi-filament PE (polyester) or P.A. (Nylon) having a tenacity of around 8 gms per denier. Some special “buoyant” ropes use PP (polypropylene because of its especially low density).

 

We also carry new age fibre like Dyneema,/Spectra (UHDPE - ultra high density polyethylene) and Vectran (polyarylate superfiber) to allow even the most discerning consumer to choose the right rope for the right job.

Strength Testing

New high spec strenth tester at nautilus braids

Nautilus has just installed a high spec strength tester for testing ropes up to 14 tonnes. There has been much knowledge gained as we can liberally test all our ropes. Much of this information we already know but the refinement gained has been great and we feel some of this should be shared with our customers because of the immense importance. Especially for braids containing UHMWPE - Dyneema or Spectra fibre.

The recent construction of a strength tester allows us to improve our braids and develop new uses. Some interesting results are displayed below.

THe importance of sPlicing

The importance of splicing rather than a landlubber's knot. Knots lower the strength of all ropes by at least 50%. this is because knots have a very high centre of curvature when the rope wraps around the same rope in a knot.

However different braided ropes made out of different materials should us the most appropriate splice for the application.

Pitch

Effects on braids

Pitch has a very large effect on the ropes characteristics; how easy it is to splice, the elasticity of the rope, plus the Flexibility and the durability.

 

We have carried out many strength tests at Nautilus and have found the optimum pitch
for each diameter of rope, both outer and centre. The graph shows the effect of pitch on stretch for a range of 10mm UHMWPE centers.
